Wearing the Right Shoes While Working

The feet provide us with mobility and balance, and keeping them safe during the work day can easily be done when the right shoes are worn. Anti-fatigue mats can provide the cushioning that is needed for good foot support, and these stress mats can have positive effects on the overall body. One of the most important things an employee can do is to wear shoes that fit correctly. It is beneficial to check shoes for existing cracks or holes that have developed, in addition to any separation between the sole and the shoe. These are indicators that it is time for new shoes to be purchased. Placing cushioned insoles inside the shoe may be adequate in reducing impact and increasing comfort. Stretching the feet before the workday begins may help to prepare the muscles and tendons to stand for the majority of the day. Additionally, It is helpful to rest the feet and stretch them while taking breaks, which may improve poor circulation that can happen from standing for most of the day. Go barefoot – Our feet were not designed to be enclosed for all hours of the day. Try to periodically expose your feet to air.

Foot Exercises – Performing simple exercises, incorporating yoga and doing stretches are beneficial. This will allow increased blood flow to the area and muscles of the foot.

Achilles tendon – Stretching the foot out flat on the floor will relax the calf muscles and tendon. These exercises can be performed almost anywhere. Make sure you add these exercises to your daily regimen.

Factors That Cause Numbness in the Toes

A feeling of numbness in the toes may be nothing more than the result of wearing shoes that do not fit properly. For instance, high heeled shoes with a narrow and pointy toe box can be the direct cause of this phenomenon. In those cases, removing the shoes may fix the problem. However, if numbness in the toes is frequent, or even chronic, an underlying cause may be indicated. One major cause of numbness in the feet and toes can be from diabetes. Damage to the peripheral nerves from high levels of blood sugar can block feeling in the toes. A condition called Morton’s neuroma, which is a thickening of the nerve tissues near the ball of the foot can also cause numbness that affects the toes. Among the other medical conditions that can result in numbness of the toes are gout, arthritis, and hammertoe. If numb toes becomes a frequent problem, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for a full exam and diagnosis.

What Is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a condition that leads to damage to the nerves in the body. Peripheral neuropathy, or neuropathy that affects your peripheral nervous system, usually occurs in the feet. Neuropathy can be triggered by a number of different causes. Such causes include diabetes, infections, cancers, disorders, and toxic substances.

Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:

  • Numbness
  • Sensation loss
  • Prickling and tingling sensations
  • Throbbing, freezing, burning pains
  • Muscle weakness

Those with diabetes are at serious risk due to being unable to feel an ulcer on their feet. Diabetics usually also suffer from poor blood circulation. This can lead to the wound not healing, infections occurring, and the limb may have to be amputated.

Treatment

To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.

Reasons for a Tight Achilles Tendon

If you are an active person who frequently uses your legs, your Achilles tendon may feel tight. Wearing shoes with elevated heels, where the heel is higher than the ball of the foot, can shorten the muscles in the back of the leg. This feeling can be replicated by pointing your toes down. While active, this happens naturally, but when it is from shoes, it is an artificial shortening position that can cause tightness. Toe springs in shoes elevate the toes, hold them there without natural engagement, and shorten the muscles from the top of the foot. When the muscle running along the outside of the shinbone is tight, the surrounding muscles tighten up and the Achilles tendon is less likely to stretch and contract fully. Walking barefoot can restore foot function, allow toes to spread out, and build stronger feet, but this has its disadvantages as well. Wearing minimalist or barefoot shoes are alternative options that can be considered. An effective way to prevent the sensation of tightness in the Achilles tendon area is to stretch the legs and feet each day. Rolling a massage ball from the top to the bottom just outside the shin bone is a myofascial release that can relieve tightness. Deep squatting, with or without a wall as support, can also help. Eczema on the Feet

Dyshidrotic eczema, also referred to as dyshidrosis or pompholyx, is a skin condition that causes blisters to develop on the soles of the feet. Those afflicted with this ailment know how debilitating it can be. Blisters often appear as tiny red and raised bumps that merge to cover large areas of the feet. These blisters are often itchy, painful, and filled with fluid. They may ooze pus if they become infected. They can be brought on by genetics, an allergy, extreme weather conditions, or stress. How Do Blisters Form?

Blisters on the feet are often the result of constant friction of skin and material, usually by shoe rubbing. Walking in sandals, boots, or shoes that don’t fit properly for long periods of time can result in a blister. Having consistent foot moisture and humidity can easily lead to blister formation.

Prevention & Treatment
